D2D Festival 2010 / Dance 2 Danse Festival 2010
Background:
On Sunday March 7, Toronto’s newest annual dance Festival, the Dance 2 Danse / D2D Festival, was officially launched live on the radio program Evi-dance on CIUT 89.5fm at 9:30 am.
Fuelled by a clear need for accessible, economically viable, culturally and stylistically diverse dance opportunities for choreographers, dancers and audiences alike, Artistic Director Sion Irwin-Childs created Canada’s newest, most inclusive Dance Festival to fill the vacuum. Consisting of 4 unique dance series housed in 2 distinctly different venues, the Festival has grown organically out of the pre-existing Dance Series: Eros, Thanatos & the Avant-Garde ~ The Cabaret Series.
Eros, Thanatos & the Avant-Garde ~ The Cabaret Series was founded in the spring of 2005 in Toronto, Ontario and has called the Rivoli on Queen Street West home ever since. The Cabaret Dance Series has grown to become a vital link in the Canadian Dance Scene, benefiting not only the artists that it showcases by giving them much-needed opportunities to develop their choreographic craft, but also contributing to the cultural richness of Toronto as well. Eros spearheads the overall D2D / Dance 2 Danse Festival initiative to create bridges that connect dance artists to new dance audiences. Unlike the other three Dance Series, The Eros Cabaret runs on a year-round, bi-monthly basis.
Mirroring Canada’s multi-cultural diversity, The D2D Festival is open to all emerging, mid-career and established Dance Artists without bias. All applicants must have completed basic dance training or possess comparable professional experience. In the event that an applicants dance modality is not compatible with conventional dance training, the Artistic Director will base a decision on the strength of the Applicant’s application coupled with a brief interview.
